Common questions

What is non-emergency patient transport?

It is pre-booked transport for people who need help getting to or from medical care but do not need an ambulance — hospital discharges, specialist and day-surgery appointments, dialysis, rehabilitation and outpatient visits. CareDrive provides seated and wheelchair accessible transport with a trained driver; we do not provide clinical care, stretcher transport or emergency response.

Can a discharge planner or case manager book on a patient's behalf?

Yes. Hospital staff, case managers and support coordinators can book for a patient online or by calling 1300 059 604. Tell us the ward or entrance for pickup, the destination and any mobility needs, and we confirm the driver and time.

Does the driver help the patient from the door?

Yes. Drivers assist from the pickup door or reception to the vehicle and from the vehicle to the destination door, including help with bags and mobility aids. Waiting time is included in the booking.

Is it suitable for someone who uses a wheelchair?

Yes — request a wheelchair accessible vehicle when booking so we send the right vehicle. Let us know the wheelchair type so we can match it.

Who pays for the trip?

The patient, a family member, the referring organisation or an NDIS plan can pay. Every trip produces an itemised invoice so it can be claimed or forwarded to a plan manager.

When should I call an ambulance instead?

If the person is unwell, needs medical monitoring, oxygen managed by staff or a stretcher, or it is an emergency, call 000. CareDrive is for people who are medically stable and able to travel seated or in their wheelchair.

CareDrive is not an ambulance service and does not provide clinical care. In an emergency, call 000.
